“Agora” Finally Bought for US Distribution

After first debuting at the Cannes Film Festival some six months ago, Alejandro Amenábar’s Agora has finally been picked up for distribution in the US by Newmarket Films (who has released other indies like Death of a President and Passion of the Christ). Agora is an ambitious $60 million film that tells the story of religious conflict in Roman-governed Alexandria as the Christian and pagans battle, often violently, for religious and intellectual supremacy. The period story centers on he enlightened thinker Hypatia as well as both her philosophical and romantic conflicts. Rachel Weisz stars as does Max Minghella and Oscar Isaac.

“Alejandro Amenábar has crafted a film that not only offers a visual spectacle but also deals with religious intolerance in a way that makes this film feel modern and relevant even though it is set centuries ago,” said Exclusive Media Group (who recently bought Newmarket) co-chairmen Chris Ball in a statement. “We are proud to be the ones taking this film to US audiences who will find that this film offers epic storytelling at its finest.” It’s not a good sign that this film has taken this long to sell, especially considering how much it cost to even make. However, I’ve been a big supporter of it ever since I saw it in Cannes (read my review).

Agora is not necessarily an incredible movie, but it is a good one, with beautiful set design and a great lead performance by Rachel Weisz. She was even getting Oscar buzz at Cannes, but I’m not sure if that’ll hold over in this release as well. Newmarket Films will put out the film in the first half of 2010. We also featured a full-length trailer for Agora back in August as well. We’ll keep you updated on Newmarket’s release plans.

Rachel Weisz can´t get enough of acting

Rachel Weisz feels so fresh and excited when she acts that the British beauty says she is a ‘bacteria’ who has just entered the world of cinema.

‘The way I feel about acting is that I feel like I’ve really just started, which is really exciting,’ the Daily Telegraph quoted her, as saying. She added: ‘I just feel there are so many different roles that I want to play, and different roles I know no one’s seen me do, and I don’t even know that I can do yet.

‘So, in evolutionary terms, I feel like I’m still bacteria or something, you know. I want to be doing this when I’m an old lady.’

Weisz’s relationship with long-term partner director Darren Aronofsky made news when the two decided to separate in 2006 for his ‘dream project’, The Fountain. She had told the London Evening Standard at the time: ‘I think we have all heard stories of couples working together and it turns out to be a disaster.

‘There is fighting on set and everything goes wrong. But we wanted to be careful. ‘It was Darren’s idea and it was the right thing to do. ‘So we went to work and had a very professional relationship, but then we would meet on Saturday and have a fight, and make up on Sunday. ‘It was very passionate and romantic.’

Weisz, who is now mother to three-year-old son, Henry Chance with Aronofsky, confesses that motherhood changed her priorities.

She said: ‘I used to just work back to back. Now I don’t do that. I do two projects a year, and take a big break between both of them. ‘I have to consider where exactly I’m travelling to.’

The Standard Theatre Awards 2009: Longlist revealed

Rachel got nominated for the Best Actress Tribute Award called “The Natasha Richardson Award for Best Actress“. It´s a tribute to the great actress Natasha Richardson who died by a skiing accident back in March. Read the article below for more information.

It has been a year when Sam Mendes finally returned to London theatre, Jude Law and David Tennant were mobbed as Hamlet and audiences flooded the West End as never before.

With 2009 set to be a blockbuster year at the box office, today’s longlist for the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards proves it has been 12 months of critical as well as commercial success.

Stalwarts such as Simon Russell Beale and Henry Goodman turned in performances to delight their fans, while faces from film or TV took centre stage, including Kevin Spacey, artistic director of the Old Vic, whose performance in Inherit The Wind is recognised.

The depth of talent was such that even acclaimed performances by Law, Dominic West and Gillian Anderson failed to make the running for the awards, chosen by our panel of London critics.

Matthew Kelly makes the longlist for two productions, Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf and Troilus And Cressida. Ken Stott is recognised for his turn as Eddie Carbone in Arthur Miller’s A View From The Bridge and is joined by co-star Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.

The shortlist will be unveiled next week and the winners announced on 23 November at the Royal Opera House, in a ceremony hosted by Evening Standard executive director Evgeny Lebedev and compered by Kirsty Young.
