Rachel Weisz is likely to star in a new film version of Terence Rattigan’s THE DEEP BLUE SEA, the Daily Mail reports. The play has been adapted for the screen by and will be directed by Terence Davies.

Weisz would play Hester Collyer, who leaves her judge husband to find “sexual satisfaction” with a former Royal Air Force pilot, the Daily Mail reports. The new adaptation will attempt to explore the play’s topics, including suicide, alcoholism, and sexuality, in greater detail than was permissible when the play debuted in 1952.

The film will be produced by Sean O’Connor and Kate Ogburn. Ogburn told the Daily Mail, “It’s going to be very exciting to get a modern actress wrestling with a major, 20th-century role.”

Weisz’s acceptance of the part is dependent upon the arrangement of schedules.

Rachel Weisz won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in ‘The Constant Gardener.’ Her other film credits include ‘About a Boy,’ ‘Constantine,’ ‘Enemy at the Gates,’ ‘Sunshine,’ and ‘The Mummy.’ On stage, she has appeared in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE (for which she won an Olivier Award), SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER, THE SHAPE OF THINGS, and DESIGN FOR LIVING.

Rachel Weisz fears she may have killed her chance to land a role in a Judd Apatow comedy – because the filmmaker hasn’t called since she drunkenly confessed her “passion for him” at a Hollywood party.

The Mummy star admits she’s a big fan of the Superbad producer, and has been desperate to work on one of Apatow’s films for years.

But she worries she went overboard when she professed her love for his work and is now convinced she’s lost the opportunity to collaborate with him for good.

She says, “I worship Judd Apatow. I think he’s extremely funny. His work is ground-breaking… I love his movies.

“I have actually met him a couple of times. I don’t actually think it went that well… I’d had a few glasses of champagne. I went up to him and I was very intense about my passion for him…

“Maybe slurring a little bit. No (he hasn’t called me).”

Weisz has already enjoyed movie success this year with The Lovely Bones, Agora and The Brothers Bloom and is all set to return with The Whistleblower.

IT’S not just comic books and graphic novels that are being seen as a goldmine of material for movies. Classic fairytales are also being revisited by Hollywood and given a dark new twist.

Among the projects is a gothic retelling of Red Riding Hood from Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, while Tim Burton is set to make Maleficent which tells the Sleeping Beauty story from the perspective of the wicked fairy godmother.

In addition, a new take on Cinderella is being penned for Disney by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada), with the studio hoping to repeat the success of its reimagined Alice in Wonderland.

Joining those will be a newly-announced adaptation of Snow White.

Relativity Media has bought Melisa Wallack’s script The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, an edgy reimagining of the original German folk tale, reports Deadline. It will be made in 3D.

Brett Ratner, who is a producer on the project, said: “This is not your grandfather’s Snow White. Melisa went back to the 500-year-old folk tale and put in some of the things that were missing from Walt Disney’s film.

“His dwarves were miners, and here they are robbers. There is also a dragon that was in the original folk tale.

“Walt made one of the great movies of all time, but ours is edgy and there is more comedy. The original, made for its time, was soft compared to what we’re going to do.”

Co-producer Ryan Kavanaugh added: “This is a project we’ve aggressively pursued and believe in. We love Melisa Wallack’s script and her fresh take on the classic story we all grew up on. This film will bring together fans of the original fairy tale and draw new audiences who enjoy adventure films.”

The picture at the top shows Rachel Weisz as Snow White in a 2007 portrait shot by acclaimed celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz.

A series of images, shot for Disney’s Year of a Million Dreams promotion, also included Dame Julie Andrews posing as the Blue Fairy from Pinocchio and tennis player Roger Federer as King Arthur. In an earlier set of images, David Beckham portrayed the dragon-slaying Prince Phillip, Beyonce played Alice in Wonderland and Scarlett Johansson dressed as Cinderella.

Weisz, who is seen with a bird resting on her hand while she befriends animals in a forest, said at the time: “I’m a woman now, but it doesn’t matter what age you are, I think you always want to be Snow White. It is every little girl’s dream.

“And to be photographed by Annie, one of the great living artists, is really an amazing collaboration.”

Leibovitz said: “She was so Snow White. Rachel Weisz was just a perfect Snow White. I wanted to put them right inside a storybook. When you work with this calibre of actor, it takes just a few seconds, a few minutes, to do these pictures.”

Thanks a lot to a nice twitter member of Amazing Rachel Weisz for the tweet on the exclusive interview of Rachel with MS. Magazine on her movie “Agora”. You can read the whole interview under the cut.

It’s unfortunate that Agora, a film about the 5th century neo-Platonist philosopher-astronomer-mathematician Hypatia, is coming out this weekend. It’s in theaters along with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Sex and the City 2: Abu Dhabi Do (not really the title, but it might as well have been).

Rachel Weisz, the star of Agora, jokes that her film has just as much action as its swords and sandals competition, but the battles are more about ideas. As Hypatia, the most prominent woman philosopher of the ancient world known to us, Weisz helps educate a new audience with what she says is actually a very contemporary tale.

Ms. Blog: I never learned about Hypatia in school, did you?

Rachel Weisz: I had never heard of her! I think history’s probably forgotten a lot of interesting women–painters, writers. George Eliot had to change her name and write under a male pseudonym. But I was terrible about math and science in school. When I add a tip, I count on my fingers! I do think however that there’s a certain level of drama seeing someone figure out something you already know, and in a time before they had telescopes looking out into space. How would they figure out the earth was round or flat? Or the relationship to the sun? It’s quite thrilling to think about.

MB: Is that what appealed to you, a chance to make her accomplishments known, to bring her to life?

RW: Yeah, why not? But what also appealed to me was the fact that this story, set in the 5th century, is about today. If you turn on the news on any given day, you will see a story about some kind of religious fundamentalism, and right now the hotter fundamentalist group is the Islamic fundamentalists. The idea that people kill each other because of their religion–you might think it’s a really primitive, archaic, 5th century thing to do, but actually no, it’s happening right now. And in America right now, with Christian fundamentalists arguing against teaching Darwinian evolutionary theory or stem cell research. It might not be as violent, but it’s still religion versus ideas.

MB: And there are other parallels with how, when the Greco-Romans are in power, Hypatia is a teacher, but when the Christians come to power they say no women should have that kind of influence.

RW: It’s like when the Taliban took women back into the Middle Ages, the Dark Ages, literally, which this film chronicles the beginning of, to see this idea of how should a woman be allowed to think, or teach or be taught. I was reading an article about some young girls in Afghanistan, post-Taliban, but still they had acid thrown at them for going to school. We can go to the moon, we have cars, antibiotics and cures for some cancers, and we think we’re so enlightened, but we haven’t figured it all out.

MB: There’s a scene where you’re teaching a class and you tell them, “We are all brothers.”

RW: And we know it’s true. She taught pagans and Christians and Jews in her class, and she did not discriminate. That’s a fact.

MB: One fact about her story seems to be up for debate–whether she was ultimately killed because of religion or politics?

RW: I think at that moment in time, they were the same. I mean, it was a new religion, Christianity, trying to get political power, and she was a kind of scapegoat. So it was religious and political, and it’s hard to separate them often, isn’t it?
