New Upcoming Project: “The Legacy of Luna”
Sep

2008

I just told you that there are no latest news but Roque emailed me and it seems like Rachel got another new project. Read more about it below and keep checking back to get the latest news on the new movie called “The Legacy of Luna”.

At the Toronto junket for Rian Johnson’s excellent crime caper movie The Brothers Bloom, which is premiering at the annual Toronto International Film Festival next week, Rachel Weisz told ComingSoon.net that the next film she does will be the eco-drama Luna, based on Julia Butterfly Hill’s autobiography “The Legacy of Luna” about a woman who lives in the branches of a Redwood tree for two years to protect the forest from the lumber companies.

That’s not such big news because Weisz has been attached to star in the movie for over a year, but originally Canadian director Deepa Mehta, whose film Water kicked off the festival two years ago, was supposed to direct the film, but apparently one of the film’s writers, Laurie Collyer, has taken over directing the film as well, according to Weisz.

Collyer’s previous film and directorial debut was the intense indie drama SherryBaby, which featured a critically-acclaimed performance from Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Weisz said that the film will start shooting in December or January, but that she’s spoken to Julia at length on the phone and plans to visit the Redwoods in Humboldt (where the film will presumably be shot) in November. Weisz just finished shooting Alejandro Amenábar’s historic epic Agora, set in 300 AD Alexandria, and we’ll have more with the actress before the platform release of The Brothers Bloom on December 19.

Definitely, Maybe DVD Reviews
Jul
16
2008

Disturbed by her parents’ choice to get a divorce, Maya Hayes (Abigail Breslin) asks her father, Will (Ryan Reynolds), to detail his relationship with her mother. What follows is a complicated but extremely likable romantic story in which Will frankly recounts his romantic ups and downs with several women. The catch is, he uses assumed names for each of the ladies, so Maya — and audience members — have to guess which is her mother. Reynolds and his leading ladies — Rachel Weisz, Isla Fisher and Elizabeth Banks — turn in nice performances, and the plotting is smarter and considerably more entertaining than that of the average romantic comedy.

Extras include making-of features, an audio commentary, and deleted scenes.

The “Definitely, Maybe” DVD is out in stores since June 24 but for all my german visitors, I just wanted to let you know that the DVD will come out in Germany on August 14 and the german title is “Vielleicht, Vielleicht auch nicht”. You can already preorder it on Amazon. Enjoy watching the movie at home!

Out Now! “My Blueberry Nights” DVD
Jul

2008

Norah Jones makes her acting debut and Wong Kar Wai does his first English-language film in this tale of a brokenhearted lover on a meandering cross-country foray. Singer Jones takes the lead in Wong’s dreamy tale of a woman in the aftermath of a romance that ended badly. First she’s seen spilling her guts to a New York cafe owner (Jude Law) who feeds her blueberry pie, then she’s waitressing down South and watching the painful marital breakup between a cop (David Strathairn) and his bimbo wife (Rachel Weisz), finally hanging with a gambler (Natalie Portman) in Nevada. The DVD has a question-and-answer session with Wong, deleted scenes and a making-of segment. DVD, $19.97.

“My Blueberry Nights”: Challenge to Opera
May
16
2008

In Wong Karwai’s new film, My Blueberry Nights, Rachel Weisz has a monologue that could almost be an opera aria. When I saw the film, and Weisz quiets down outside a bar where she’s just thrown a fit (with Norah Jones sitting by quietly, ready to listen to anything Weisz says), I thought, “If this was an opera, now we’d get Rachel Weisz’s aria.”

But I couldn’t have known how musical Weisz’s monologue would be. For one thing, she often spoke in musical phrases, with pitches – musical notes – I could just about have written down in musical notation. But she also made music in a higher sense, gripping my attention simply with the sound of her voice, quite beyond the meaning of her words. Up to a point, this happened as her voice was pushed and shattered by her feelings, but as I listened – maybe because I’m a musician – the sound took on a force that was completely musical (understanding here a wider definition of music, which goes beyond the notes and chords of traditional music, and enters the wider world of pure sound.)
