Toronto Film Festival 2009: “Agora”
Aug
18
2009

The Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 10-19 this year and on hand will be a ton of films vying for distribution or hoping to get some early word of mouth to ensure their fall and winter releases satisfy the box-office expectations or guide the way to an Oscar nomination. As a result, we here at RopeofSilicon have received 73 new images from 18 of the films that will be screening at this year’s festival and these films include the likes of everything from Niki Caro’s The Vintner’s Luck to Grant Heslov’s The Men Who Stare at Goats, two Werner Herzog pictures in The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Calls New Orleans and My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done, as well as something for horror fans with new looks at Jennifer’s Body as well as a gallery for [REC] 2.

Along with each preview over the following four pages I have also included the trailer if it is available as well as the synopsis, the cast and the director for each film. By clicking on the picture links, a new browser window will open so you can browse the images and close the window to return to this article and continue the preview.

Agora will be featured at the Toronto Film Festival 2009.

Rachel Weisz talks about starring in “A Streetcar Named Desire”
Aug

2009

It was a monster movie that put her on the Hollywood map and her portrayal of an activist who puts her life on the line that won her an Oscar. Now Rachel Weisz is back on stage relishing an altogether different challenge – the daunting role of Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire.

Are you trying to freak me out here?’ Rachel Weisz rocks back in her seat, her dark eyes widening, and gives a playful laugh.

We have been talking about the role of Blanche DuBois, which she is playing on stage at the Donmar Warehouse, as one of the great character studies of modern theatre – monstrous, pathetic, delusional and dipsomaniacal – and of the actresses who have played her in the past: Jessica Tandy, who first tackled the role on Broadway in 1947; Vivien Leigh, who immortalised her on film in 1951; and Glenn Close, who was the last actress to play Blanche on a London stage, seven years ago. Blanche is the actress equivalent of Hamlet, the ultimate yardstick – a role in which you sink or swim.
